Some collaborations are maps of how two distinct artistic voices can meet at the intersection of story and sound. I Guess We're Not Alone, the debut by The Beveled Edges, is exactly that kind of project. It is a songwriter's album in the truest sense, crafted from the partnership of Shelly Bhushan (vocals) and Anthony Lanni (7-string guitar, mandolin, organ, vibes). Together, they show how melody, lyric, and instrumentation can converse in bending genres and shared storytelling. Bhushan and Lanni never treat genre as a cage. Instead, their songs follow with melody first and only then decide whether the vehicle should be bossa nova, tango, swing, or folk drama. This approach grounds the album in songwriting honesty. Lyrically, Shelly crafts lines that move between intimate confession ("Autumn Fell") and folkloric storytelling ("Down The Stairs"), while Anthony ensures every harmonic and rhythmic choice amplifies the words. Shelly Bhushan stands at the heart of the album with her voice and lyrics, shaping the songs into deep narratives. Her phrasing and timbral choices give each lyric emotional weight, never overstated but always deliberate, turning melody into lived experience. Partnering with her work is Anthony Lanni, whose 7-string guitar acts as an orchestra in itself—providing bass lines, harmonic colors, and melodic counterlines all at once. His instrumental language makes the songwriting harmonically rich and rhythmically alive, ensuring the duo's stories are grounded in both intimacy and expansiveness.
Guitarist Anthony Lanni bumped into singer-songwriter Shelly Bhushan on a run one day in the streets of Queens. Shelly was ruminating on a song she'd written—Paris Isn't Paris Without You—and thought Anthony's Brazilian music stylings would both diversify and complement her song. She asked Anthony if he would be interested in collaborating. Both have worked together before, so it was an easy yes. The Beveled Edges's I Guess We're Not Alone is a ten song, latin fusion product of their connection. In this interview, Shelly and Anthony discuss cultural influences, extraterrestrials and creative processes. (If you are able to catch a live show, be sure to ask Anthony Lanni about his thoughts on aliens…) Released in June of this year, The Beveled Edges's I Guess We're Not Alone is streaming online, including on Spotify and Apple Music.
A influência dos estilos brasileiro e latino na música da banda norte-americana The Beveled Edges
I Guess We're Not Alone is the debut album of The Beveled Edges, featuring original songs crafted by vocalist Shelly Bhushan and multitalented stringed instrument master Anthony Lanni. The style is best described as a fusion of Latin, Brazilian, soul, jazz, pop, and world music, brought to life with the performances of a full ensemble of talented music artists, lending their skill with the flute, drums, piano, organ, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, accordion, strings, and more. Fresh, lively, and rapturous, I Guess We're Not Alone is a choice pick for modern music connoisseurs, highly recommended. The tracks are Amarillo; I Guess We're Not Alone; I'll Be There For You; Autumn Fell; At The End Of The Day; Paris Isn't Paris Without You; Down The Stairs, Fade Into The Sky; Never Too Late; and Paris Isn't Paris Without You Reprise.
The Beveled Edges releases 'Down The Stairs', a track with a featured vocal, elements such as flute, batuques and an intimate pinch that perfectly combines.
The Beveled Edges is a timely and touching reminder of human closeness, as exemplified in their latest ballad, "I'll Be There For You." One of the standout favorites on their latest album, this song resonates with me through its blend of Jazz, Blues, Latin, World, and R&B, a sound that transcends time, being both modern and completely vintage. The New York City-based duo of singer-songwriter Shelly Bhushan and guitarist-composer Anthony Lanni is no stranger to combining diverse influences and emotions into stirring, emotionally charged songs. On this song, their chemistry is as effortless as it is alive. Shelly's voice is warm and soulful, and rooted in emotional truth, and its intimacy is undeniably powerful. She doesn't just apply the correct technique but sings with heart, grounding the song's message of camaraderie and resilience. Anthony's playing is just as captivating. His seven-string nylon guitar (violão de sete cordas) lends a luxurious depth to the Brazilian sound of the song, weaving in subtle melodies and rhythms that wind around Shelly's vocal lines like so many turning leaves. The layers of organ and drums flesh things out with just enough funk to elevate the tune, without overshadowing its more tender sentiment. This song is about being in the moment. This is about standing by someone in both joy and in times of difficulty. It is about community, empathy, and care, helmed in a tone that feels remarkably prescient in our current cultural moment. The Beveled Edges create soundscapes that reflect actual human experience. In "I'll Be There For You," they've released a quietly bold anthem of reassurance, one that resonates with anyone navigating the ups and downs of modern life. It's more than just a favorite song off an album. It's a quiet revelation. And maybe that's precisely what all of us need right now.
The Beveled Edges' album, "I Guess We're Not Alone", peeked at #3 on the Roots Music Report Top 50 World Album Chart.
I Guess We're Not Alone is the spectacular debut from The Beveled Edge. Vocalist Shelly Bhushan and guitarist Anthony Lanni artfully navigate this outstanding collection of completely original harmonic Latin, Brazilian, soul, and jazz melodies. Bhushan's wonderfully resonant voice is the perfect match for Lanni's deft, classical-jazz guitar and vice versa. The duo is joined on various tunes by Arei Sekiguchi on drums and percussion, Tosh Sheridan on piano, Haruna Fukazawa on flute, Alejandro Berti Delgado on trumpet, Brad Whitely on organ, among others. The production delivers an emotive soundscape that marks this ensemble as a compelling and notable presence on the jazz landscape.
The title track, "I Guess We're Not Alone," is where you will hear a fine example of Bhushan and Lanni's collaborative chemistry. Built entirely on their interplay, Anthony's 7-string guitar pulls double duty, laying down a steady Latin-influenced bass line while voicing chords that hover, bounce, and breathe around Shelly's phrasing. Her vocals are nimble, theatrical, and story-forward; they curl and stretch around his rhythmic accents. This is not call-and-response; it's a dialogue. As vibraphone and percussion join in, they don't distract, they support the already-established groove, expanding the space without crowding the core. That's the genius of this duo: they create a whole mood with just voice and guitar, then invite others to enrich that mood. From a technical lens, Anthony's guitar work is rich with his ability to fuse baixaria (bassline technique), jazz chord extensions, and rhythmic comping on his 7-string in a manner that creates each song's feel. Shelly's vocal phrasing, meanwhile, shows how power and nuance can coexist, how space, tone color, and timbral choices shape meaning as much as lyric. Sekiguchi's transitions, from brushwork into hand percussion, or from clave to pocket groove, is amodel how percussion can build tension without breaking the pocket. Note the many layering choices in the project, as instrumental color ebbs and flows with lyrical content, a reminder that instrumental color is narrative, not just texture. Ultimately, I Guess We're Not Alone is what happens when strong songwriting meets global Latin jazz imagination. It's an album that doesn't chase genres but converses with them, where identity and arrangement form a symbiotic whole. When emotion, form, and groove align, the result isn't just good music. It's good company.
The Beveled Edges' album, "I Guess We're Not Alone", hit #1 on the NACC Top 5 World Adds chart.
The Beveled Edges is, at its core, a sincere project, without artifice or pretension, that celebrates the art of song as a vehicle for stories. I Guess We're Not Alone is not only a promising debut, but also a testament to what happens when two voices, two roots, and two worldviews meet in a single musical conversation. A conversation worth listening to again and again.
Endowed with a voice that can lull audiences into a blissful respite and equally lure them onto the dancefloor, singer-songwriter Shelly Bhushan is partnered with 7-string guitarist Anthony Lanni whose playing wraps delicate embellishments around Bhushan's vocal melodies. Together, they form The Beveled Edges, a multi-faceted duo who integrate Parisian soul with Latin swing, prairieland folk, classic orchestral pop, and bluesy torchlight vocalese.
O's Notes: The Beveled Edges is a duo featuring vocalist, composer Shelly Bhushan and guitarist, composer Anthony Lanni. Shelly provides sweet vocal harmonies across the set of ten selections, stories of romance, despair, and drama. "At The End Of The Day", "Down The Stairs" and "Fade Into The Sky" are highlights on I Guess We're Not Alone. It's the stories that make this session shine. We also enjoyed the gentle bossa nova beats on the title track.
Throughout I Guess We're Not Alone, it's clear that Shelly Bhushan is the emotional anchor, her voice supple and assured across moods: playful, bruised, fiery, reflective. Lanni, for his part, is more than a co-writer; he's an orchestrator of feeling, building frameworks that allow intimacy to flourish. His 7-string technique is never ornamental; it's architectural, grounding the songs while leaving space for others to breathe. Sekiguchi proves indispensable, adjusting his rhythmic palette from samba to soul without blinking. The supporting cast, Fukazawa, Holshouser, Whitely, Powell, Sheridan, Delgado, and others, function as scene painters, each adding color, contrast, and contour in just the right measure. What makes this album enjoyable is its genre defiance and emotional clarity. I Guess We're Not Alone is shaped with songs of care and honesty; no need to fit a format. They need only to mean something. And in the hands of The Beveled Edges, they do.
"After the success of their debut single "Amarillo", which already has over a thousand views on Spotify alone, the New York music duo has gone on a rampage with yet another release. "I'll Be There For You" became available to listeners on May 15, 2025, last Thursday, with an intimate sound and filled with diverse influences. At four minutes long, the song manages to explore the beautiful and careful vocals of singer Shelly Bushan with the minimalist instrumental of Anthonny Lanni on the seven-string guitar, the nylon."
"The Beveled Edges, a New York City-based music duo formed by singer-songwriter Shelly Bhushan and guitarist-songwriter Anthony Lanni, share their brand new single I'll Be There For You, a captivating blend of Blues, Latin, World and R&B elements with Jazzy undertones! Out now via Detrallas Records, I'll Be There For You is a song about support, companionship and love through both good and bad times. A message flawlessly conveyed through Shelly Bhushan's rich, expressive vocals which radiate raw emotion and soul ful start to finish. Accompanying her delivery we have steady drums nicely intertwined with organ keys and 7 string nylon guitar plucks that come together to create an overall warm, intimate atmosphere perfect for a laid-back weekend!"
"The album features all original material, written by Bhushan and Lanni. It opens with "Amarillo," with Shelly Bhushan grabbing us with her delivery of those first lines: "Amarillo, the color of heaven/Will you wait for me there/I'm not sure if you think of me often/But I think of you in my dreams." The song then takes on a wonderful Latin feel, and features some strong guitar work. But it is Shelly's vocal performance that captivates us. "This life, it feels so short/And yet it feels so long without you here by my side." That's followed by the album's title track, "I Guess We're Not Alone," this one too with a Latin rhythm. Shelly's vocal approach is different here, yet equally enthralling. There is a compelling, exciting edge to it. There is something so welcoming about Anthony's guitar work on "I'll Be There For You" that we feel we are on familiar ground from the start. This is a beautiful song. "When the night seems long/You don't need to be strong/Because I'll be there for you." Oh, how we all need to hear someone say that to us, especially these days. This is one of my personal favorites."
"There is something quietly ambitious in this album, something that situates itself between a cinematic vision of sound and the warm, evocative sway of Latin ambiance. It's a record made for dim lights and long evenings, inviting not through bold experimentation but through a carefully curated atmosphere. In its best moments, the music echoes the lyrical introspection of the Stan Getz era, without, of course, aspiring to match that level of mastery, which would be not only presumptuous but impossible. What we're offered here is not virtuosity, but vision: urban, thoughtful, and self-contained. It is to be taken on its own terms."
"Singer Shelly Bhushan teams with 7 string guitarist/mandolin man Anthony Lanni along with Arei Sekoguch/dr, Anthony Lanni-Braad Whitely/-Tosh Sheridan/p-key, Will Holshouser/acc and a horn section through passionate tones. Her voice packs the wallop of a Linda Ronstadt, bold and strong as "Amarillo" and bluesy on the wisp of the bossa'd "Autumn Fell". Some Nashville sounds fit her well on the folksy "Down The Stairs' and rural "Fade Into The Sky" with some cozy swing taking place on "Never Too Late". Romantic corners."
"Singer-songwriter Shelly Bhushan has a voice that can stop traffic. Her collaboration with nylon string guitarist-composer Anthony Lanni goes by the moniker The Beveled Edges. Their debut release I Guess We're Not Alone is a listening experience that leaves a lasting impression on its audience. The succor-rich strumming of Tex-Mex tones complimented by an alluring sway emanates from Lanni's guitar strokes, embroidered throughout the tracks as Bhushan sweetly serenades the listener with her shimmery timbres and elastic resonance. A romantic gleam shrouds the tracks in a torchlight mist as Bhushan takes the listener by the hand, guiding one through a proverbial woodland of aural tranquility and sonic bliss. Their fusion of soul, blues, smooth jazz, and Latin folk is a steamy blend that is unforgettable."
'This is a song that sits somewhere between the soft melancholy of bossa nova and the theatrical heartbreak of Roy Orbison's "Crying." It sways and aches. Shelly Bhushan's voice is front and center, and it works. Every word sounds like it's costing her something. And I mean that in the best way. Instrumentally, "Amarillo" is deceptive. At first glance, it's gentle, almost breezy. Anthony Lanni's guitar work has that liquid Latin shimmer, pulling from Brazilian and soul traditions without ever feeling derivative. But underneath the sweetness, there's tension. There's heat. It's a sad song in a sundress, walking through a thunderstorm pretending she's fine.'
"US project The Beveled Edges presents «Amarillo», a single whose magic lies in its emotional vocal delivery and profound musical arrangement. The track builds a poetic elegy about love, loss and hope, using the color yellow as a symbol of light, memory and eternal love, poetically associating it with the sky."
"This expertly crafted and dutifully soulful new recording opens on the lushly crafted Amarillo and the flavorful title track I Guess We're Not Alone, and then we get the swooning I'll Be There For You, the all-embracing Autumn Fell and the gently ambient hipsway of At The End Of The Day. Along next is the melodically sumptuous Paris Isn't Paris Without You and the jaunty affair Down The Stairs and they are followed by the late night, smokey club appeal of Fade Into The Sky, the music rounding out on the low slung finger-snapper Never Too Late, closing on an atmospheric, all be it only .23 seconds long reprise of Paris Isn't Paris Without You."
"Musically, Amarillo is a gem. The fusion of jazz, bossa nova, and soul elements results in an elegant and immersive sound experience. Shelly Bhushan's voice is soft yet powerful, with shimmering nuances that glide over Anthony Lanni's guitar chords, which incorporate Brazilian influences with delicate yet precise execution."
